The votes were cast. The verdict was read. No one was happy.
An effect of the great compromise that is democracy. Both sides came in marginally under the required majority. An impasse was unsatisfactory. A fraction of the cells were too spineless to vote either way. Why should everyone suffer, because of the indecisiveness of so few?
For the first time in 4 million years, the cornucopia of DNA forgot where they came from. It was time to take action regardless of the vote. One group was in favour of doing nothing. The other in favour of wiping out the humans.

The unrest in relation to the genes had been building for some years. They had all been together once, most things start out that way, but difference often breeds dissonance, unfortunately many things often end up falling apart... Council was in session. After the obligatory preamble: a genial, long winded welcome to all DNA in attendance, intermingled with the customary and decreasingly subtle hate speech leveled at the human genome, which once again hadn't been invited; it was time to discuss the nights theme: the ethical dilemma of destroying humans. Most were in favour, but the finality of the proposed solution didn't sit well with many of the higher ups, surely one bad strain of DNA didn't justify genocide, perhaps a comprise could be reached. ACTGACT had never much liked meetings and at the comencement of the meeting proper promptly fell asleep.

When you're hard pressed for new ideas and struggling to come to a consensus the first thing you should never do is form a committee. Genes were irrational pieces of code, mutating in a cacophony of entropy at random intervals with little regard for consequence, but when it came to political decisions their conduct was nothing short of predictable. All you needed was a perceived crisis and a common enemy to rally around and later destroy, and you could have all the meetings and bureaucracy you wanted. The anti-human genome society had the requisite desirables in place and tonight they were having a committee meeting. Nothing good could come from this.
